On the Road Again - Cross Canada 2006

Should we or shouldn’t we?

Tired of the gloomy headlines about gas prices and every TV news broadcast opening with “Fuel prices – how high will they go?” I needed to face the facts of how much it would cost us to drive across Canada to Newfoundland and return through the USA. Figuring we’d get 7 or 8 miles to the US Gallon and we’d be travelling over 12,000 miles, I calculated a total of $5,873 (Canadian dollars).

How did we justify spending that much on fuel?
· We will be travelling for four months.
· We plan on boondocking as much as possible, meaning we’ll have little cost for campsites.
· No casinos; hence no buffets (thank the lord!); food costs should be the same as at home.
· We counted up the ways we had saved money recently and we could justify allocating some of those savings towards the gas. Amazingly, we figured we had $12,000 to spend.

Note: In case you’re wondering why I used miles and US gallons instead of metric, our motorhome odometer is in miles and I got the projected 7-8 mpg from the manual.
